Check baby's heart tones, positioning and growth
Monitor moms vitals and urine
Diet and supplements
Healthy lifestyle choices
Emotional well being
Prenatal Birth Social Sessions
As an added bonus to great individual care with Traditional Roots, you may also join, at no additional cost, a beautiful program called Birth Social.
I believe education is a cornerstone of midwifery care so each mother in my care receives a Birth Social ® A Complete Prenatal Guide, by Carolyn Reisman. This workbook is written specifically for parents planning an out-of-hospital birth. In this informative 200-page prenatal guide, you will learn about pregnancy health, home birth supplies, when to call the midwife, complications, newborn care, and so much more.
For your convenience you can combine your prenatal visit with a Birth Social session where you meet with the midwife for a checkup and then join in a group with other parents due around the same time to discuss the topics in the Birth Social Guide.
Water in Labor and Birth
Whether you decide to birth in water or just labor in it, laboring in water has many known benefits, the greatest being the promotion of relaxation and effective pain management. The weightlessness of the water lessons a mother's body weight, allowing free movement and position changes. Buoyancy also promotes more effective uterine contractions and improved circulation, resulting in better oxygenation of the uterine muscles, less pain for the mother, and more oxygen for the baby.
Labor and Birth
Birth with Traditional Roots is a beautiful, family experience. Throughout the process of childbirth I will offer support and gentle encouragement while ensuring the safety and well-being of both you and your baby through careful monitoring.
In labor you are encouraged to eat, drink, walk, change positions, etc.
I will make suggestions designed to guide your labor and birth.
I highly encourage the use of water, massage, movement, vocalization, Doulas and support from your partner to help with labor pain management.
Baby's First Hour
Delayed/optimal cord clamping is a norm not a request when you birth with Traditional Roots. Typically the umbilical cord is clamped and cut long after the placenta has been delivered.
We assure that mother and baby have the time they need to establish bonding and baby-led breastfeeding during the first one to two hours before performing the newborn exam. The first hour after birth has been shown to be a critical time in development for a newborn regarding brain development, bonding abilities, and breastfeeding success. During this "magical hour," there are nine instinctive stages that a baby goes through when held skin-to-skin by the mother.
I will discreetly and quietly monitor both mother and baby for the first 3 hours after the birth to ensure that mama is recovering well and that baby's vitals are stable. All of this is done without interruption of family time and bonding. After the mother has nursed her baby, rested, snuggled with her family and eaten a meal, I offer a beautiful warm and relaxing herbal bath for both mother and baby then once everyone is tucked back into bed I will do the newborn exam on the bed right next to mom and family. I assure that all the vitals of mother and baby are normal before the midwives leave, which is about three hours after the birth.
First Week In Home Postpartum Care
Day 1, 3, 5 and 7 after birth you will receive comprehensive, nurturing in home postpartum care.
Well mama checks can include but are not limited to:
Vital signs and maternal health
belly binding w/firming paste
extensive, in home breastfeeding support
information or ideas to help you feel nurtured and supported both physically and emotionally.
Well baby checks include:
newborn metabolic screening, CCHD screening and vital signs
guidance with newborn care
All of this without ever having to leave the comfort of your home.
Care with Traditional Roots doesn't end at 6 weeks. Together with AMW, I offer weekly group postpartum sessions for all of my clients that also include your private 2, 4 and 6 week well mama and baby visits.
This is a very relaxed gathering where you will have the opportunity to connect with other like minded mothers, show off your beautiful baby, talk about your birth experience, ask breastfeeding questions, have a midwife help you with latch issues, etc. The biggest advantage of this type of postpartum care is building a beautiful, powerful circle of mamas just like you! We should never do this alone.
As mothers we are stronger together!

"Rachel is such an amazing individual. Throughout my entire pregnancy and postpartum journey, I have never felt rushed during a visit and she has always been available if I had any questions or concerns. This was my second pregnancy, though my first time with a midwife. I am so glad I found Rachel. She is so devoted and well-informed on many topics. She also provided me with plenty of resources that I learned so much from. Towards the end of my pregnancy, I developed health issues that resulted in me risking out of an out-of-hospital birth. Despite this, Rachel was still by my side. She eased my worries and was with us as I was admitted to the hospital. Immediately after being discharged, Rachel did all of my postpartum visits and baby check-ups, not to mention, she came to us! It was nice to have Rachel checking in on us. If you are looking for a midwife who will go above and beyond for you, Rachel is your person!"
