Pregnancy Infusions

Benefits of Infusions in Pregnancy

by Susan Weed, Master Herbalist

Wise women have recommended herbal tonics (infusions) for childbearing for thousands of years. These herbs are empirically safe and notably effective. Tonic herbs improve general health by balancing and sustaining energy flow and focus in the body.

Tonics allay annoyances and prevent major problems. They can boost the supply of vital minerals and vitamins, increase energy and improve uterine tone.

The tonics indicated for pregnancy need to be used regularly; a tonic is to the cells much as exercise is to the muscles: not much use when done erratically. Better benefit will come from using them 5 times a week or more. Benefits also include:

  • Aiding the kidneys. Since the kidneys must cleanse 150 percent of the normal blood supply for most of the pregnancy.

  • Nourishes the liver.

  • Restores and calms the nervous system, helping to relieve anxiety.

  • An incredible blood builder and oxygen-rich tonic.

  • Increases fertility.

  • Nourishes mother and fetus.

  • Encourages the growth and healthy sheen of hair, skin, nails, and teeth.

  • Eases leg and muscle cramps.

  • Drink during labor and it will diminish pain during and after birth.

  • Helps prevent hemorrhage after birth.

  • Reduces hemorrhoids.

  • The list of vitamins and minerals in these herbs includes nearly every one known to be necessary for human health and growth.

Tinctures

Skullcap Tincture

Naturopathic doctors and herbalists like Dr. Marisa Marciano use it for anxiety and nervous tension, exhaustion and depression  (the initiation of new motherhood). Skullcap’s amazing benefits arise from its properties as a relaxing nervine (calms and nourishes the nervous system to promote a peaceful mood), an anxiolytic (anxiety alleviator), and spasmolytic (muscle spasm reliever). What does all this mean for pregnant women? A more peaceful labor, less pain during and after birth, amazing bonding, a more relaxed mental/emotional state, and postpartum emotional support.

Preparting for Labor Tincture

  • A tincture to help prepare your body be at its best when labor starts.

  • BENEFITS include an easier, shorter, and more comfortable labor and delivery, plus a shorter recovery time.

  • Formulated WITHOUT Blue Cohosh so it doesn't raise a mothers blood pressure.

Motherwort Tincture

“Wort” is a Middle English word for “herb” or “plant”, so this is literally a “mother’s herb”. Indeed, Motherwort has a long history of use postpartum, to help someone who has just given birth to recover physically, and adjust to their new (parenting) role. This herb calms the nervous system (and the thyroid) along with its heart-calming effect.

After Birth Tincture

Aids in lessening after birth pains.

Afterbirth contractions become common the more times a woman has given birth.

  • Calm, support and relax the body after birth.

  • Traditional herbs for postpartum care.
